A problem that a lot of new people run into once they have decided that they want to sell a product as their home based business is what type of product do should they sell? Before making any decisions, a few questions should be asked. A bit of research can save you a lot of agravation in choosing the correct product to become a successful home based business.

1. Is it a product that people will buy?

One of the easiest ways to know is to ask. By going online and researching in forums and social groups that are involved in your niche, you can get a very good indication if your product can meet people's needs. DO NOT do a sales pitch, but instead most of your questions can be answered by reading and answering questions.

2. Is it popular for the long term or is it a fad?

A good example of a fad is Harry Potter. It is very popular right now because of the movies. But are people going to still buy Harry Potter merchandise five years from now when the movies are done? By watching the trends and what others are doing you can determine how long your product may be a good seller. It does not mean you do not follow the trends, but if you get involved in a fad, be prepared for it to end and have another product available.

3. Is it something you are interested in?

It is hard to sell something if you do not like it or would not use it yourself. You want your sales pitch to sound believable and for people to know that you truly believe in your product.

4. Is there a lot of competition?

The competition for sales is bad enough without selling something that everyone else is also trying to sell. Having a unique product with no competition is the ideal situation, but in all likelihood there will be others selling your product, so you want to find on with limited competition, or offer a unique twist on your product that sets you apart from others.

Once you have asked yourself these questions, you will be able to narrow it down more and find something that you can sell and sell successfully. Once you have your products, the next step is to discover if you have a vialble product. Start promoting and if your choice was correct you will see sales.

If you do not see a lot of sales do not be afraid to make changes, either to what you are selling, or how you are selling it. But, do not jump ship too soon. When you are wanting to be a successful home-based business, you want to give your business time, always base your decisions on traffic and inquiries. If you have high traffic, a lot of inquiries, but no sales, then it is time to start your research again.
