A common mistake that many business owners make is they get wrapped up in their reasons for making money on the Internet and forget that it isn't about them. As a business, you are ultimately striving to meet the needs of your customer in exchange for eventually earning some money.
New businesses have to remember, the customer is not visiting your website with the thought of your bottom line. They are searching for a solution to a problem, and are hoping you can provide the answer. If you have the attitude that you are going to help people before you worry about taking their money, you will actually make more money.
Three things happen if the need of the customer is placed before your financial desire.
1. You will build trust. Think of yourself, you would much rather give your money to someone you trust, rather than someone you have never dealt with.
2. You will gain free advertising. People share their experiences, and through word of mouth you can easily get 100's of new clients because you treated one person like a living, breathing entity, rather than a cash machine.
3. You will create a repeat customer. If your customer feels that your wish is to help them solve their problem, they will return over and over again.
Trust takes time and you have to be genuine. People will figure it out if you are faking. There are marketers who present themselves as genuine, you sign up for their newsletters, and within one email, you realize that it is a sales pitch with no help.
Become a trusted adviser first, it doesn't mean you can't offer suggestions, but your content should be help first, second and third priorities, and making the sale fourth. Then you will have a real opportunity to make money on the internet.
